Important Policy on Lost or Stolen Medications
We understand that losing a medication or having it stolen can be incredibly stressful. However, it is important to know that federal and state laws strictly regulate the prescribing and dispensing of controlled substances. A licensed prescriber, cannot replace or refill a controlled substance early, even if you have a police report documenting the loss or theft.
What This Means for You:
Controlled substances include, but are not limited to:
Stimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse)
Benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin)
Opioids (e.g., Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Morphine)
Sleep medications (e.g., Ambien, Lunesta)
Other scheduled medications (e.g., Suboxone, certain muscle relaxers)
These medications cannot be refilled early or replaced if lost or stolen due to strict legal regulations that protect against misuse, abuse, and diversion.
Even with a police report, providers are legally bound not to issue an early refill or replacement prescription.
Alternative Options for ADHD Patients
If you have lost a stimulant medication for ADHD, there are non-controlled options that may help you manage symptoms until your next refill is available. These include:
Strattera (Atomoxetine) – A non-stimulant that works on norepinephrine.
Qelbree (Viloxazine) – A newer non-stimulant ADHD medication.
Clonidine or Guanfacine (Intuniv, Kapvay) – Originally used for blood pressure, but can help with ADHD symptoms.
Bupropion (Wellbutrin) – An antidepressant that may help with focus and attention.
While these medications may not work exactly like stimulants, they can be a temporary option to help manage ADHD symptoms. If you find yourself in this situation, please reach out so we can discuss the best next steps for your care.
